I am a full time worker. The company I work for cut my 40 hr week to 32 hours a week. Is This legal.?
This is a very large company. They have cut the hours of part-time and full time employees. They tell us that full time is any hours between 32 and 40 hours. There are 3 other location in Bakersfield that are not adapting this function. Is this law or is this just the company trying to save money at our expense. This has lasted a month and a half. My bills are getting behind and I don't think this is fair. Please send and answer asap.

"Law" does not determine the business policy of an independent business, as to how many hours constitute full or part time. Any business has the goal of profit.. fairness is not a legal issue. It would be legal for them to completely shut down the entire company, if they so choose. Many companies make the effort to benefit their employees as a matter of good business sense. Nothing obligates them to do that, as a matter of law.

i really do not know the answer. i would suggest contacting your state labor board / department of unemployment security and asking too. i kind of suspect that it might be legal. i was once a part time student hourly in college years ago (couple decades and worked a whopping 10 hours a week). manager got irritated because i wouldn't work fill in for other staff that called in / expected i'd miss a course for the sake of my 3.35 cent an hour job. LOL. long story short, he informed he he was cutting my hour for 4 hours a week as a sort of "punishment" to let me know that employment was a fragile and responsible relationship and that favors 2 way street. i would have liked to have telled him to go to H ... but i really needed the money and couldn't do it.

Yes and its regularly done when a company thinks its business will slow down. Just as they could fire you, and then just hire someone willing to work 32 hours a week. Or Instead of firing 1 worker the company cuts five peoples hours feeling that is better then having to decide which employee to fire.If your objection is strong enough you may go to unemployment and see about what options you might have, like would you be entitled to unemployment benefits if you quit (probably not, but you could ask, as that is called Underemployment and probably varies from State to State); and is quiting a good option if one company begins cutting hours there are probably others in the same field/industry doing the same, its about the normal routine when the economy slowsdown, some sectors more then others.

Absolutely. In California, as most places, full-time employment is considered to be between 31 and 40 hours per week. As long as they maintain that range, they are fully compliant with labor laws.
